Arnold Schwarzenegger may be one of the most acclaimed action stars ever, but his star power might only be one of the positive present in Mobile Strike. Featuring the famous celebrity, the game is your typical real-time strategy MMO. Its overall marketing campaign may have been overblown bad it’s sad to say the game isn’t as amazing as its ads. Nevertheless, Mobile Strike is a decent strategy game, complete with all the strategic elements you might be looking for in a mobile RTS game. However, its biggest downside is it barely offers anything new or unique.
If you have played other free to play RTS games before, you can jump right in on Mobile Strike. Titles like Game of War: Fire Age and Clash of Clans are comparable to it, with certain elements looking rather...similar. The big difference is the setting: Mobile Strike is set in modern times, which means the units and weapons are coincide with the ones present today. Weapons like mortars, as well as vehicles like tanks, helicopters, and planes are present.
In any case, the game follows the regular and tried and tested freemium game format. You are a handed a plot of land to build your military base. As soon as you have set things up, your next task is to strengthen it and turn yourself into the strongest military commander. Before you can do that though, you’ll need to build a formidable army, and join an alliance to form a coalition force to decimate those who oppose you.
This sounds exciting, but to be honest, getting to the part where you become the best military commander is nothing short of tedious. You see, the game is filled with menial tasks filled with tasks and quests. These include the core missions, alliance missions, and daily task. Accomplishing them would mean receiving some moolah and experience, helping you level up. For example, you will need to build a certain group of structures or enemy units. This forces you to do certain things and avoid what you envision your base to be. On a positive note, this enables you to progress quickly and gives you something to do. This gets repetitive after a certain amount of time however.
Given the multitude of tasks, the waiting mechanic doesn’t do a good job in helping you accomplish them. Like all other free to play real-time strategy games, you’re supposed to wait for several minutes to dozens of hours to wait for a building to be finally constructed. The same concept applies when training new soldiers or manufacturing new vehicles. Most of the time, you’ll end up waiting for the time to run out. Otherwise, you can spend real money on freemium currency.
Despite the cool trailer which shows frantic battlefield skirmishes, getting immersed in battle is nonexistent in Mobile Strike. The fights are automated, and the result depends on how strong the attacking units are vs the ones defending. You will be earning rewards with every successful attack. A good feature is being able to lend a hand to other members of your alliance - you can chat with them, and even provide resources.
Finally, let’s talk about the user interface. Though the menu bar clearly highlights everything you need to know and do, it can be downright confusing. Additionally, playing the game means having to deal with an endless stream of notifications and messages. Compared to other RTS titles though, the translations and text-based content are well-made. In our gameplay, we’ve barely spotted any localization issues.
So, is Mobile Strike a game worth playing? You shouldn’t be expecting something new when playing it as it is similar to most RTS games that you may have played in the past. However, this makes it relatively easy to jump in, and it makes the learning curve a little manageable. Overall, it is a decent title, and it may appeal to people looking for an MMORTS with a modern setting.
