At first, Invasion: Modern Empire appears to be a first-person shooter, as advertised in the photos and videos. However, this is another bad case of false advertising: the game is your typical, run-of-the-mill real-time strategy game full of microtransactions and timers. Your goal here is simple: build your base, upgrade the buildings, and raise your army. Given the bloated cast of RTS games out there, is this game worth a try? Let’s find out:

The game is set in year 2100, and the remaining remnants of humanity gather to rebuild their homeland. You will then be treated to a rather good-looking presentation and overview of your very own base. After which, a military lady who looks like she dresses up for a cosplay event instead of armed conflict named Lieutenant Tanya will be guiding you through the tutorial. Fortunately, the whole process seamlessly will give you a quick orientation about Invasion: Modern Warfare’s basic facets.

You will first be tasked to build a farm which produces food, a vital resource in unit production. Doing so is quick, easy, and intuitive: it only requires a series of taps. Your base is a large area, full of squares wherein you will be constructing various buildings. After building the farm, the next task will be to build an armory, the first structure that will be producing your first military units. As you progress further into the game, you will then end up upgrading buildings to create more advanced units and as a prerequisite to construct more important structures.

There is also a research element into the game, which is vital if you want stronger technologies. Furthermore, there are daily quests to give you direction and at the same time, extra cash and resources for you to use later on. Of course, there’s always the usual microtransactions route.

The main antagonist in Invasion: Modern Warfare is an organization called the Black Crusader, and you will encounter them as early as the tutorial phase. The battle system tabulates your units’ strength and compare to that to your opponents’. In a nutshell, the side with the higher numbers will always win. With that said, though you won’t have any semblance of control when the battles occur, you will be treated to a short cinematic, which is pleasant to look at.

Invasion: Modern Empire’s strength is mainly on its graphics and presentation aspects. The buildings’ and units’ sprites and 3D models are pretty well-made and are good to look at. Saying that it has console level graphics is a stretch, but we can safely say that it is above its peers in this regard. Even the sound effects are pretty good on the ears - lieutenant Tanya’s voice actor sounds outstanding. However, Invasion: Modern Empire falls on the localization aspect: there are grammatical and spelling errors on the text. It does not get in the way of the gameplay, but it is quite unpleasant.

Overall, Invasion: Modern Empire does not provide anything new: it’s simply your typical RTS game. The setting may be a little different, but every mechanic will be familiar if you’ve played other games in the genre. However, its outstanding graphics does set it apart from other games in the genre. Give it a try if you’re looking for another RTS, but it’s definitely not a game you would be playing for long.
